The problem
Past LEGO robotics sets posed a challenging learning curve, preventing users from effortlessly starting their coding adventure. Our goal was to streamline the process and boost enjoyment, ensuring a uniform experience on mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
The solution
The LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor application delivers an intuitive, drag-and-drop coding platform, coupled with pre-defined missions and tasks. This enables individuals to seamlessly embark on their inventive journey in the field of robotics.
My role
I guided the digital progression from early drafts to polished designs, working alongside digital designers, model creators, marketing experts, and software developers. Initially, I was mainly doing UX, but eventually took ownership of our design system shifting it from Sketch to Figma and reimagined both UI/UX for our application across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices which you'll see below.
The ever-expanding robot lounge.
A growing robot roster.
The main screen showcases our continuously expanding assortment of robots through a card-style arrangement, guaranteeing smooth adaptability on various devices and simple expansion for additional robots.
Each robot is unique.
Selecting a robot directs you to its unique page, featuring comprehensive assembly guidance and entertaining activities for users to explore.
Ambient trailers.
Immersive background videos enrich the experience, with unique trailers for each robot that set the tone. This gesture has been highly appreciated by children!
Intuitive coding from
simple to advanced tasks.
Intuitive access to code projects.
An easily accessible drawer enables users to reach the coding canvas effortlessly, facilitating easy access to existing projects and the creation of new ones.
Seamless coding canvas.
Our collaboration with MIT allowed us to harness the renowned Scratch Coding Language, which we customized to suit the MINDSTORMS visual theme while optimizing it for touch-based devices and smaller screens using interaction design principles.
Drag and drop coding blocks.
The platform offers a vast array of programming blocks, enabling users to easily control the Hub, motors, and sensors.
A customizable remote control.
The adaptable remote control interface effortlessly merged with our programming language and received extensive acclaim from users. This established a novel benchmark for interactive engagement and was implemented across other LEGO endeavors.
Note, UI was done by Janus Carstens.
Machine learning.
Our platform educates users on fundamental machine learning concepts, enabling image and audio recognition as coding inputs. This added versatility allows users to interact with their robots using cameras or microphones for a more immersive experience.
Text-based coding is here.
Advanced users can leverage Python on our platform as an alternative to block-based coding, unlocking more possibilities for sophisticated coding projects.
An array of educational
resources for all levels.
Get started with a simple tutorial.
To ensure a seamless onboarding experience, I directed first-time users to the Getting Started Tour, which acquaints them with the hardware and coding essentials.
Need help? We got you covered.
The comprehensive Help Center, featuring articles and videos, addressed various coding topics, supporting users' learning journeys. We introduced this feature post-launch and it contributed to MINDSTORMS ranking among LEGO's top 5 products with the highest Net Promoter Scores (NPS).
An arsenal of guided activities.
I created a comprehensive set of tools that facilitated the creation of guided activities, designed to instruct users on coding fundamentals. This feature, in particular, exemplifies the successful collaboration between the design and engineering team.
And much more!
Beyond the features mentioned above, I designed numerous other screens for the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor app, culminating in LEGO's most intricate interactive experience.
