LEGO MINDSTORMS is a robotics kit that combines LEGO bricks, specialized hardware, and an app to build and program robots.
The Problem
Previously, LEGO robotics kits were complex and intimidating for beginners. We aimed to simplify the experience for a more enjoyable and consistent use across all devices.
The Solution
We introduced the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor app, featuring user-friendly drag-and-drop coding and pre-set missions, guiding users through their journey of robotics.
My Role
I led the digital transformation, enhancing user experience and interface across multiple platforms, and transitioned our design system from Sketch to Figma.
An Immersive Robot Space
Robot Collection
Our main screen displays an ever-growing range of robots, easily accessible and adaptable for future robots.
Unique Robot Pages
Each robot has a dedicated page with detailed assembly instructions and engaging activities.
Ambient Trailers
We've included captivating background videos for each robot, a hit with young users.
Ease into Advanced Coding
Code Projects
An easily accessible drawer enables users to reach the coding canvas effortlessly, facilitating easy access to existing projects and the creation of new ones.
Coding Interface
Our collaboration with MIT allowed us to harness the renowned Scratch Coding Language, which we customized to suit the MINDSTORMS visual theme while optimizing it for touch-based devices and smaller screens using interaction design principles.
Drag-and-Drop Coding Blocks
The platform offers a vast array of programming blocks, enabling users to easily control the Hub, motors, and sensors.
Customizable Remote Control
The adaptable remote control interface effortlessly merged with our programming language and received extensive acclaim from users. This established a novel benchmark for interactive engagement and was implemented across other LEGO endeavors.
Note, UI was done by Janus Carstens.
Machine Learning
Our platform educates users on fundamental machine learning concepts, enabling image and audio recognition as coding inputs. This allows users to interact with their robots using cameras or microphones for a more immersive experience.
Advanced Coding
For experienced users, Python is available as an alternative to block-based coding, unlocking more possibilities for sophisticated coding projects.
Resources for Every Step
Beginner's Tutorial
New users are welcomed with a tutorial to familiarize them with the hardware and coding basics.
Help Center
A comprehensive support center with articles and videos to assist users in their learning process.
Guided Activities
I designed a range of activities to teach coding fundamentals, showcasing our collaborative design and engineering efforts.
And Much More!
I've also designed numerous other screens, contributing to LEGO's most intricate interactive experience.
